Your stomach is burning and it's preventing you from getting comfortable or relaxing before bed. Unlike a stomach virus, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and acid reflux can appear suddenly but linger for many days, often with symptoms recurring after meals. Fortunately, there are many ways to treat both acid reflux and GERD naturally – but first, you need to know the difference between the two conditions. Discover more information on acid reflux from your Austin, TX, chiropractor.

Acid Reflux vs GERD Symptoms

An easy way to understand the difference between both acid reflux and GERD is that acid reflux is gastroesophageal reflux (GER) without the D for disease. Acid reflux is that burning in your esophagus commonly associated with eating acidic or greasy food that many people call heartburn. Drinks like coffee and alcohol as well as smoking tobacco have also been known to cause this discomfort.

There are frequently two major causes of acid reflux. The lower esophageal sphincter, which allows food to drop in from the esophagus into the stomach, may remain open. If it does food and/or acid can flow back into the esophagus causing the painful or burning feeling or burping. It is easy to correct in our office. The other cause may be a hiatal hernia in which the top of the stomach bulges up through the lower esophageal sphincter preventing the sphincter from closing and allowing food or acid to flow back into the esophagus. If this is the case, manipulation of the stomach to pull it out of the sphincter frequently works very quickly and the acid reflux decreases.
